Leadership in a Time of Rapid Change
By Gary Burnison

Not since the Great Depression have Wall Street and the financial services community seen such tumult in such a short period of time. In light of recent events, the strength of the entire economy will be tested and more than ever, leadership will be required to navigate organizations through the turbulent waters.

The job of a leader has never been easy. Not only must leaders set an organization’s destination and course, bring individuals and teams into alignment, and make certain the organization’s values are upheld, they must do these things in the face of risk, uncertainty and in real time. Today’s leaders are routinely judged in 90-day cycles with little emphasis placed on long-term vision and strategy. Leadership is not about celebrity, charm or charisma, but rather about one’s willingness to listen, learn and lead. Leaders must have the ability to motivate colleagues through sound strategy, communicate openly and honestly, and inspire others through their own actions.

This whitepaper, guided by the personal insights and experiences of Korn/Ferry Chief Executive Gary Burnison and drawing from research compiled by The Korn/Ferry Institute, pools together leadership insights from nearly 50 executives spanning a variety of industries and geographies.
