The rise of the chatbots

Chatbots aren’t there to solve your shopping woes. They’re now so sophisticated that they can guide candidates through the recruitment process.

In a world where you can get hundreds of applicants for one role, its little wonder that recruiters are feeling the pressure.

Enter the chatbots. Gone are the days of decision trees and hardcoded logic, of robotic responses and communication frustrations. Today’s AI is highly sophisticated, emotionally intelligent, and capable of having engaging, open-ended conversations in multiple languages. They can interpret tone, understand slang, so well that human users can't tell the difference between chatbots and other humans. In the recruitment space, this has proved extremely useful. Talent selection has long been an extremely manual and involved process, not least because of the number of applicants applying for roles. Chatbots are already making an incredible impact here, helping recruiters with everything from passive candidate sourcing to onboarding, and everything in between.

Recruiter’s story

Our increasingly digital world has evolved recruitment strategy. Many organizations hire less against specific roles and more against the skills they need for the future. This is where chatbots are making a real impact.

When a large tech company needed to scale up fast, they had to look beyond the usual suspects to close their talent gaps. A chatbot was able to not only sift through passive candidate databases but followed up with proactive emails or SMS to prospects.

Once they got a bite from a potential hire, the chatbot kicked off the application process. They helped applicants fill out forms, pre-screened them for the skills needed for specific roles and kept in touch with updates on progress. The chatbot was also able to serve behavioral assessments at an appropriate time in the hiring workflow, sifting out unqualified candidates in a fully automated fashion.

This saved the recruiters not just hours, but days a month. They no longer needed to speak to everyone to weed out the unqualified from the next big thing. The chatbots did it for them, through natural and engaging conversation. Just as the recruiter would.

“Can I help you today?”

Recruitment and Talent Management are also learning lessons from retail.

“We're used to visiting sites with automated assist, seeing chat windows pop up with "looking for something today? How can I help?". HR uses chatbots to equally seamless effect.” Says a recruiter at a consumer goods company.

“Now people can search for roles that match their skills, but they can also ask about benefits and company culture. These AI simulations show them the day-to-day demands of specific jobs to see what's a good fit and what isn't. And all these varieties of experience are delivered right in the chat window.”

Easy-breezy for applicants

And they are not just making the process easy for recruiters. A recent candidate looking for a retail role seamlessly moved through the application process with a chatbot’s expert help. As well as help with filling out forms, the chatbot helped dynamically arrange her interview, checking interviewer diaries, sending timeslots, and resolving scheduling conflicts.

Then when she landed the job, the chatbot again used their dynamic scheduling capabilities to help with the onboarding. Setting up meetings, automatically sending out paperwork, and tracking what she and her new employer needed to do to complete the hire.

The future

And this is just the beginning.

As chatbots become more and more sophisticated, they will continue to add value to the recruitment process. Automate workflows. Streamline every aspect for both the company and the candidate. All of which will only free up recruiters so they can make even more impact on the future of the business.
