If business is war, corporate boards should be the brain trust ready with sage guidance—not only the voice of shareholder’s interests. So why isn’t this always the case? The fact is that the membership of many boards—though composed of talented executives from a range of backgrounds—may not be diversified enough.

Corporate boards need to consider not just the talent of individual directors, but the overall composition of the group. Even a board of superstar members often has significant overlap in some qualifications, and glaring holes in other areas.
