Accurate Self-Insight Decreases Derailment Risk

In new research, a team at the University of Minnesota Department of Organizational Leadership, Policy, and Development examined data from U.S.-based leaders who completed PDI Ninth House’s PROFILOR®.

The research shows that leaders who build strong relationships with upper management, listen to feedback, and take action based on that feedback are less likely to derail. It also shows that leaders who have an accurate or self-deprecating self-awareness minimize their derailment risk.

Contrary to what is often thought, when leaders are at risk for derailment, it’s because of personal and relationships issues, not poor decisions or results. This confirms that feedback is an essential tool for leadership development, and for avoiding derailment.
