Lack of cultural understanding impacts patient care/outcomes
LOS ANGELES, April 30, 2014 —Korn Ferry (NYSE:KFY), a single source of leadership and talent consulting services, today announced a partnership with HealthStream (NASDAQ:HSTM), a leading provider of workforce development solutions for the healthcare industry, to offer Korn Ferry’s new Breakthrough Cultural Competency in Healthcare™ eLearning program to HealthStream’s healthcare organization customers.
The Breakthrough Cultural Competency in Healthcare™ program, which uses interactive videos and hands-on exercises, trains both clinical and non-clinical professionals to recognize and address cultural barriers that negatively impact healthcare delivery and outcomes. Cultural barriers can stem from attitudes on gender, ethnicity, age, religious beliefs and socio-economic status.
In this program, healthcare professionals begin with self-awareness exercises and then work toward enhanced teamwork and delivering more competent, culturally aware services to patients. Finally, the program will help healthcare professionals equip patients with the skills to communicate with their providers, as well as share their beliefs and preferences regarding the delivery of their healthcare.
Culturally appropriate care is particularly important as the Affordable Care Act shifts the focus of healthcare reimbursement in the U.S. to treatment outcomes and patient satisfaction.
“The Breakthrough Cultural Competency in Healthcare™ program will support health care professionals in providing better care to a diverse patient population and will be a critical element in meeting the objectives of the Affordable Care Act,” said Oris Stuart, senior partner, Korn Ferry who leads the firm’s Workforce Performance, Inclusion & Diversity practice. “By partnering with HealthStream, we will enable healthcare providers around the U.S. to better understand cultural frameworks, interact more positively with patents and caregivers, and improve health outcomes.”
Stuart concluded, “The implications of not investing in cultural competence are quite high. Lower patient satisfaction scores and reductions in reimbursement are just two of the costs.”
