Before that Thomas was the head of strategy and corporate development at Severstal and held senior positions at McKinsey & Company.

Thomas received both a Doctor of Laws Degree and a Mag. phil. in Slavic Languages from the University of Graz (Austria). He also received a diploma from the Bologna Center of the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University (USA). Thomas speaks German, Croatian and English.
