When Los Angeles General Medical Center’s long-standing partnership with a California university shifted, its entire talent strategy needed to change. With Korn Ferry's help, the U.S. hospital didn’t just hire at scale—bringing on more than 200 healthcare providers—it also transformed its culture and improved patient care in the process.

Resetting a Healthcare Workforce

Los Angeles General Medical Center (LA General) is one of the busiest public hospitals in the United States, with nearly 150,000 emergency visits a year. It was also at a critical crossroads.

Soaring costs, shifting regulations, and misaligned incentives weren’t just a financial burden. They were eroding staff morale and affecting quality of care.

More than a staffing solution, the hospital needed a workforce reset and a culture transformation.

Implementing Culture Change in Healthcare

Pivoting to a new staffing model meant hiring full-time employees across every clinical department. It was a daunting challenge, but also a chance to strengthen the hospital’s culture.

The urban health system provides complex care to underrepresented communities. It's tough, demanding environment requires passionate practitioners who believe in the hospital’s mission and vision.

To find them, Korn Ferry built Success Profiles that defined not only skills but the values and mindsets of the right-fit candidates.

New employer brand messaging and a targeted engagement strategy helped attract people who cared about the mission as much as the medicine.

“LA General took on the challenging task of redefining who it was going to be as an employer,” says Korn Ferry’s Liz Bickley. “We needed to tell a story that inspired people to join and stay.”

Using Korn Ferry Nimble Recruit and Korn Ferry Select, a number of physicians and clinicians were identified who not only fit the job requirements but also aligned with LA General’s values.

“Each physician presented to us was thoroughly vetted and matched not only the job requirements, but also, importantly, our unique organizational culture and values,” says Brad Spellberg, Chief Medical Officer at the Los Angeles General Medical Center.

From Staffing Crisis to Healthcare Transformation

More than 200 mission-aligned practitioners joined the team, resetting the culture and energizing the workplace.

Staff across the hospital noticed how engaged and collaborative the new hires were. Patients and families noticed the difference too, praising teamwork across specialties, something they hadn’t experienced at other hospitals

And the impact wasn’t just cultural. Patient mortality declined. LA General’s Leapfrog safety grade rose from a C to a B, and then, for the first time ever, to an A in 2024.

What began as an urgent hiring need became a hospital-wide cultural reset—one that improved teamwork, raised safety grades, and saved lives.
