Navigating the Uncertain Career Horizon

Korn Ferry’s Anya Weaver explores how learning agility, presence, and purposeful action help leaders accelerate—even in cloudy conditions.

Takeoff is rarely comfortable. It’s loud, turbulent, and full of pressure. Then the clouds arrive—those moments of zero visibility where all you can do is trust the process and stay buckled in.

Careers unfold the same way. The job landscape is unpredictable: manager changes, reorganizations, shifting priorities, and layoffs. Research shows that 54% of workers say job insecurity significantly increases stress. Those facing unexpected changes are also more likely to report harm to their mental health—59% versus 17% of those who are not.

Moving forward when the view is cloudy is hard. Even the most experienced leaders feel unsettled when the path ahead disappears. But clarity comes after the climb, not before it. We connect the dots backward with ease; connecting them forward requires leadership—the kind that starts within.

Leaders who thrive in uncertainty don’t wait for the clouds to clear before they start leading. Purpose-driven leadership is born at the intersection of clarity and capability.

When the clouds close in, five practices keep leaders moving forward:

Know Who You Are

Grounding in values, leadership philosophy, and guiding principles creates stability that uncertainty cannot shake. Identity becomes the anchor when everything else feels unsteady.

From that foundation, routines are a powerful tool for staying steady amid change. When intentionally designed, routines become powerful allies amid disruption. They shift from rigid rituals to adaptive patterns that support growth, reflection, and adjustment. Strong routines conserve mental energy, reduce decision fatigue, and help leaders stay resilient enough to pivot when the moment demands.

Get Clear on What You Want

When career clarity is missing, purpose becomes the compass. Ask yourself:

  • What work feels meaningful?
  • What impact matters, and why?
  • What are your non-negotiables—pay, environment, boundaries, the risks worth taking?

Purpose sits at the intersection of personal values, mission, and resources. When those three align, leaders act with intention. That alignment builds resilience and fuels intrinsic motivation. Purpose is a stabilizer in times of uncertainty.

Write your purpose down. Purpose clarifies the path—even when what lies ahead isn’t fully visible.

Define Your Differentiator

What makes a leader memorable? What sets them apart? A résumé, conversations, and leadership presence should bring capabilities to life in ways that make others want to know more. The goal is to make it unmistakable why this person elevates the work beyond expectations.

This requires discipline around what a leader is known for and the value they reliably deliver. The most powerful differentiators are not broad or generic; they are rooted in how a leader thinks, decides, and acts. They are precise, repeatable, and evident in moments that matter—during change, under pressure, and when choices are unclear.

These differentiators shape trust. When uncertainty rises, people gravitate toward leaders whose patterns are consistent and clear.

Upskill With Intention

Value grows as capabilities expand. Identify the skills that increase contribution and invest in them.

Korn Ferry Institute research shows that leaders with strong learning agility—marked by curiosity, reflection, and calculated risk-taking—navigate uncertainty and accelerate growth. They pursue new experiences, take risks, and reflect on what they learn—then apply those insights to future challenges. These leaders are in short supply, yet they operate comfortably in ambiguity—using data and acting decisively, even when the path ahead is unclear.

Nurture Relationships

Leaders who navigate transitions quickly rarely do so alone. They build the right support.

  • Create a personal board of directors with people who challenge, support, and champion you—and treat those relationships as a strategic investment.
  • Expand exposure and experience. Organizations, programs, communities, and events expand exposure and experience. Whether in person or virtual, every room entered is an opportunity to learn, contribute, and be seen.
  • Seek candid feedback from people who support your growth and development. Strong relationships broaden perspective, accelerate progress, and increase influence. The most sustainable relationships are mutually beneficial.

Leadership is the courage to move forward without certainty. When leaders rise above the clouds, the view changes. It may still be raining below, but above the storm, the sky is clear, and that clarity accelerates impact.

Navigating career transitions, uncertainty, or reinvention is not a solo journey, and it is not a sign of being stuck.

The leaders who rise fastest aren’t waiting for perfect visibility. They’re the ones who trusted the climb even when the clouds of uncertainty were thick. That starts with being present—truly present— in the moment you’re in.

When you show up fully, you extract every ounce of learning, contribution, and strength available to you. That’s how you build altitude and turn uncertainty into momentum. Whatever your role, your transition, or your in‑between season, this moment is offering you something.

So, ask yourself: What is this moment inviting you to build, practice, or grow? Lean into it. Maximize it. Every step you take now is preparing you for what’s next, so when the opportunity comes into view – and it will – you’ll meet it with confidence. You’ll be ready.
