The objective of this study was to investigate the extent to which the importance of various leadership competencies may change across organizational levels. That is, are the same competencies needed to be a successful individual contributor as a top level executive? Likely not. If not, how can we sufficiently prepare individuals to take on the additional responsibilities and challenges of the next level? What skills do we coach them? What job experiences should we provide them? Mike Lombardo and Bob Eichinger (2001) refer to this process of leadership development as the “Leadership Machine.”
